As an Australian manufacturer, we are constantly competing on price with imported foreign garments. These imported clothes are often produced by labourers who are paid an unsustainable or unfair wage. In China, workers in a garment factory may only be paid AU$322 (US$248) per MONTH – or just $11 per day. This is in comparison to the Australian minimum wage of $3015.20 per MONTH. That is an almost 10 fold higher monthly wage here in Australia.

We are first and foremost committed to providing a sustainable wage to those who produce our garments, and so we choose to produce all of our clothing here in Australia, despite this additional challenge. And although we can’t compete on price directly, we can certainly compete on providing excellent value for money for our Australian Made products.

Here are some of the ways we do it!

One of the main pitfalls of cheap imported underwear is that every aspect of the underwear refined and reduced to be as cheap as possible for the end consumer. That is cheap, at the expense of quality.

Our approach to design and material selection is quite different. As we can’t (and wouldn’t want to) compromise on the wages we pay to our employees, we instead invest more into our materials. This way we can ensure that our products provide great value for money for our customers.

We have chosen fabrics sourced from our local Australian manufacturers, which are significantly more durable than the fabrics you may find in cheap underwear. Let’s make a detailed comparison between our Cotton Classic underwear valued at $23.99 per pair, and a generic pair of cheap undies valued at $4 per pair.

In our comparison, we can look at how long we expect each pair of underwear to last, and how that translates to a typical yearly underwear budget. We will consider the ‘lifetime’ of a pair of underwear to be the time that it takes for holes to begin to form, the material is deteriorated and easily torn, or the seams begin to wear noticeably.

A cheap pair of undies isn’t made to last; the material used is often very thin and prone to wearing out prematurely. Some pairs may begin to show some holes forming or worn-out seams after just 3 months of wear. Our Australian made undies however, are made from a material which is made to last. After 3 months of wearing and washing our underwear, the used pair looks basically indistinguishable from a brand new pair. We expect the lifetime of our underwear to be around 18 months, provided that the care instructions are followed.

Considering the initial purchase price divided the number of months they items are expected to last, we find that it costs $1.33 per month to own a cheaper pair. In comparison to our underwear, though more expensive, is expected to last much longer and costs only $1.11 per month.

For a typical person owning 10 pairs of underwear a year, the Australian-made pair provides equivalent value. Our Australian made underwear may cost more at the outset, but over time they prove their worth and give great value for money.

Our undies are Australian made, and we also design our undies (and other clothing) right here in Australia. We understand the different needs of our fellow Australians, and can tailor our products and designs to provide the best performance and value to our customers.

In fact one of our earliest designs is in response to the need for Australian made underwear which was suitable for plus-sized women. We consulted with our friends, family, and the wider community and realised that the underwear that was available in plus-sizes was not comfortable for a majority of these women, or the size they needed was not readily available for them to purchase.

This lead to the creation of our first product: High Waist Briefs. This design features an extra high waist to help cover and support the stomach. The stretchy material selected for this product helps it to conform to many varieties of body shapes firmly and comfortably. We have adapted this design to fit a very wide range of sizes (8-28), and continue to provide quality designed undies to the Australian plus-sized community.

Our designs are continually tested and refined. We value the feedback we receive on our products immensely, and any suggestions we receive (no matter how small) are valuable to us and are considered in the design refinement process. You can be sure that as a result, our designs are top-notch.
